Audi 80, Electric Windows and Electric Sunroof

Audi 80, L Plate (94), 128000. Electric Windows (only front, no electric in rear) and electric sunroof do not work.

However, when I drive the car on a long journey, they both work itermittently. Its a nightmare (been caught with the window half way down in heathrow long stay car park, before going away and sunroof has been tilted up and soaked inside - have manually lowered).

Any ideas, I'm not really good with cars, I've looked in the fuse box, but none of the fuses seem to relate to either the windows or sunroof?

Can anyone help?

Thanks

There's a larger relay, actually a circuit breaker, located in the relay panel behind the (US) driver's kick panel. These are known to cause problems.

Could also be caused by the ignition switch but that's not as likely.

Is that where the fuse box is for the windows? Are the windows and sunroof related in thw same problem? Mine's a UK registered car. Is the panel in the same place?

Thanks

It's not the fuse box, it's a large relay panel. It will be in a similar place in the UK; I'm just not sure if it will be on your drivers or passengers side. You can't miss it, it's a bunch of relays.

Both windows and sunroof are related; this relay runs both. It's the relay in that panel that takes up two places, all the others take up one space.

You can pull it apart and look for a cold joint. You can also jump the relay (FOR TESTING ONLY) and see if the systems now work. If so, fix the cold joints or replace the relay.

On (US) you have to remove the shelf under the steering column to get access to it
I think it's on the right on (UK) but not sure

fast928...you're the bomb! All my windows suddenly quit working when I hit three of the window switches at the same time. I read this posting and after checking everything according the manual, I opened the relay and found a bad solder joint. A quick soldering job and voilą, everything worked again!

Many thanks to you and Bentley Publishings forums for saving me $200...again!

Hi - I have been having these intemittent problems with the windows and sunroof too. I first tried replacing the pump unit in the boot, to no avail. Then found out about this 79FA404 control unit relay - located it, but couldn't find any obvious corrosion / dry joint issues inside. To be safe, I ordered a new one off e-bay.... so disappointed when I put the new one in, and nothing still!

My sunroof has been stuck open for 6 days now - just very lucky that the UK has had no rain!

Does anyone have any further suggestions as to the cause of the issue. I don't think it's the switches on the door or roof, because all either work or don't work, which is why I was so convinced it was the relay when I learnt about this.

So frustrating, when everything else about this vehicle is so fantastic.

Thanks in advance.
