I need to know where all 3 marks need to be on the cam i have a mark at 12:00 or is it level with the front of the valve cover? Know the ignition is marked pretty well on the distributor for #1 cylinder last but not least the crank is at 0 degrees on the flexplate or is it advanced or retard a certin degree

thanks Eric

Eric,

Bring the crankshaft to TDC. Use the marks on the flywheel or torque
converter; they are easier and more accurate.
Set the intermediate shaft at TDC for cylinder #1. Turn the shaft until the
distributor rotor points to the mark on the distributor rim.
Set the camshaft to #1 by lining up the mark on the inside of the sprocket
with the forward edge of the cover gasket rail.

Our Service Manual
http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=VG92&subject=20 has the
details.

Shawn,

The timing mark (dot) on the front of the intermediate shaft toothed belt
sprocket lines up with a notch on the back of the crankshaft V-belt pulley.
This is shown in our VG92 manual (grey book cover) on page 14-2, Fig. 4-3. I
do not have a digital image of this graphic to attach. Hopefully you have
the book. http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=VG92&subject=20

I also noticed your post on the Cabrio, Scirocco board. The same graphic
shows up on page 3-13, Fig. 4-3 of our VS93 1985-1993 Cabrio/Scirocco manual
http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=VS93&subject=20

The intermediate shaft drives the oil pump and the distributor.

Hope this helps,
