My car is a 12/1997 A8 Tiptronic 2.5Tdi V6 150cv powered (no quattro)

Since a couple of months i have an mysterious oil leak under my engine. There seems no appearant leak on the external side of the motorblock or camcovers. No coolingfuild comsumption is diagnosticated. but my underying protection covers are always covered by motoroil. Do someone have an idea from where this oil is coming

Good Morning, Janick

The A8 TDI is not sold in the USA or Canada, so we don't have any
information on it. I think I would have the engine carefully washed and
then checked for leaks. There is also an ultra-violet chemical than can be
added to the oil and the leaks are more easily spotted with a UV light. If
you cannot find the leak, than it would be a good idea to take it to a
repair shop who is familiar with that engine.

Hi,

Did You find out what caused the leak? I have the same problem with the same engine in an 1999 A8.

I'm currently working on an A8 with oil-in-coolant and coolant-in-oil troubles, trying to follow the procedure. I got the oil cooler unbolted (with a lot of difficulty!) but it's boxed in by the frame and exhaust manifold and although it's free and I can wiggle it around, I can't get it out. Any advice?

I had a similar mysterious leak on my '99 A6.
It was automatic transmission fluid leaking from a coupling in the cooler line. I removed the right front wheel, then used a pair of spanners to tighten the coupling.
Problem solved.

Cheers,

Messy oil leaks are sometimes traced to failed oil pressure switches. Well worth a look - picture enclosed.

I forgot to add for greasyguy that he may find access through a front wheel arch panel after removal of a front wheel? You'd be surprised how often oil cooler failures are diagnosed as failed head gaskets. Let me know how you get on.
