Weak Springs in Automatic Trans Valve Assemby - harsh gear changes

Has anyone looked at the springs in the automatic transmission valve assembly
and found weak springs on the valves ie below spec / compressed with age and causing the valves to operate the gears quicker and causing harsh engagement of the gears.

I have a VW Vanagon (T25/3) in UK with 090 diff/3 speed on a DG engine water cooled (1985)

It still has this annoying thud into reverse when warmed up/hot.

Have checked all other options, ie revs, mounts, ATF fluid, adjusted 2nd gear brake band, checked CV joints, all OK

I can reduce the thud a bit by foot hard on the brakes.

There is some slack in the diff 4 star wheels but this would also be a problem when cold

When cold - the engagement is sweet and no thud.

Any ideas out there ?
