The E39 motors are finally needing service to the lower end. The dealer shop manager let me know that it is fairly straight forward. Why the basic info and data is not published in the Bentley manual is disappointing.
I have two E39 vehicles, the second (99 5401 Sport Wagon) was purchased when the rings were "coked up" on the 98 sedan.
I would like to tear down the motor and give it a rebuild. The M62 is a marvelous motor and one can't find rebuilt short block easily on the market. It may be that all that needs to be done is to take apart the motor and clean everything, but I'm not really that optimistic. Still, it would be good to have the data.
I got two copies of your 2-manual set for these cars. One hardbound copy still in the wrapper and unused.
