Back again with a starter issue. Back in November I had success replacing the water pump without having to mess with the IP, thanks to much needed help from FKH161. This time it's a starter issue only when it's activated on a cold start. I replaced the starter a couple of years ago because the wiring to the starter burned up due to excessive cranking in cold weather. I put on a reman starter which worked fine until the weather got cold, then it began to have difficulty engaging the flywheel but only on the first cold start. Once the engine warmed up the starter engages without issue, but on the next cold start it will spin without catching and eventually it will grab enough to start the engine. When I replace the starter I can't remember if I put oil on the starter gear shaft or not but I may have and I am wondering if this is a no-no or should the shaft not be lubricated. If I did lube it this might be the reason for the gear sticking on cold starts? I'm sure the starter will have to come off for inspection but perhaps someone can answer the lube or not to lube question first. I am just hoping that the flywheel gear is OK. I never had this problem with the old starter.
