A6 Loss of acceleration when ESP, ECP and ABS lights all come on

I have a late model 2000 Audi Quattro, A6 2.7T. Recently while driving my car would not accelerate, or would but very very slow. I could continue driving but acceleration was nil. On my display I had the EPC light, the ESP light and the ABS light all on (and Check Engine Light). I pulled over and shut off the engine and it restarted and all the lights went out and it drove fine. Over time this happened several times and always those 3 lights, but sometimes when I would restart just the EPC light would go off and I would have power again, even with the other two lights. I hooked up my OBD ii to the car and kept pulling up codes that indicated the MASS AIR unit (I think was the P0103 I don't have my notes in front of me), which I have replaced I also pulled an P1173. I also replaced my Accelerator unit. The lights went a way for a day or two and now are back again. Also now every once in a while I will start the car and it will misfire and run like crap, I get the misfire error code but when I clear it, it starts normally again and runs like a champ. I pull the computer and made sure it was clean, dry and the connections were all good, all the wiring is clean an nice. I have replaced the MASS AIR sensor twice as I keep getting a Refurbished unit, so I thought that was the problem. Help me please...

I have a 2004 allroad with the same problem, same lights and codes. I also have a noise when I accelerate, coming from the front right side. I cleaned the mass air sensor and changed the filter, still no change.

Hi Bill,

  • Do you have a manual or automatic transmission?
  • How old is your battery, and are/were the connections loose or corroded?
.- What are you referencing to as the "accelerator unit"? The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)? i.e. the gas pedal?
  • Are those the only two codes?

Given that im correct when my assumption that your vagcom scan tool access is limited, Try this:

  • Key on engine off, clear all fault codes.
  • Turn key off and pull it out.
  • Look in the engine bay at all the vacuum lines and especially the rubber throttle body "y" boot by the the hose clamps. Check for deteriorated lines, cracks or softness.
- Get back in, turn the key on, dont start it or touch any pedals.
  • Wait one minuet. You should hear a series of clicking noises. This is a form of a throttle adaption.
  • Turn the key off again.
  • Go over to the Mass Air Flow sensor and disconnect the harness. Leave it disconnected.
  • This will cause and immediate trouble code. No worries.
  • Start the car, let the rough idle work itself out. Then drive the car and let us know the results.

If thats no difference, another simple procedure is:

Perform an Engine Control Module (ECM) cold re-boot by disconnecting both battery cables, (key out of ignition) momentarily touching them together and then leaving disconnected for 15 minutes.

Turn the key on, engine off. Wait 1min. Turn key off. Then start the vehicle, test drive.

These are only procedures to help rule out some suspicions of mine gathered from the information you supplied. I hope it helps.

CZ, do you have the 2.7?
What kind of noise? Whining? Hissing? Only under acceleration or at all times?
Is there any abnormal smoke out the exhaust? How is the oil level?

Gemini,
Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it... Here are some answers to your questions:
1) It is an Automatic
2) I bought the car last summer and I am not sure how old the battery is, but it is strong and clean. I can check to see if I can find a date on the battery if you think that might be the problem.
3) Yes I replaced the TPS (someone suggested that might be the problem)
4) Yes I don't have access to a vagcom tool of high quality just a basic OBD II tool that shows codes and let's me clear the check engine light.

I also have the error codes I have pulled, but primarily they are the Mass Air sensor, but will provide the list of codes that have occurred.

I will try your suggestions this weekend, and get back to you on Monday.
Thank you again for your time...
Bill

Gemini,
To answer a couple of your questions you posed:
1) Battery is a little over 3 years old, clean connections and wires.
2) The codes I had received previously, that you asked for was P0741, P1173, P1128, and P1130.
3) The throttle body Y boot and vacuum lines all seem OK, no damage I can detect. Overall interior of the engine are is clean
4) This is an automatic transmission

I tried both solutions you offered. I did as you suggested and drove the car for about 20-30 minutes with the Mass Air Flow disconnected, after that amount of time it finally went into Limp mode and the ECP came on. I shut the car off and reconnected the MAF and it drove for a while but then went back to it's usual routine.
So I tried your second suggestion, and did an ECM cold re-boot. This seemed to do the trick. Check engine light and the other three lights all stayed off. I drove the car for three full days without a failure. The only thing that did happen twice was the ABS and Traction Light momentarily came on and went off very quickly while accelerating on two separate occasions, but the ECP light did not and it never went into limp mode...Until last night. I was driving into my neighborhood and slowed to a stop to make a turn into the neighborhood, all 3 lights came on again and the car was in Limp mode as I accelerated. I pulled into my driveway, turned the car on and off twice and all the lights cleared. When I used the ODB II tool, no error codes came up. Drove it into work today and so far nothing... ???

Any ideas?

Gemini,
Oh as for an more recent update: After resetting the computer like you suggested the car ran well for 3 days with no error codes or failures. Then it started again. All three lights and limp mode, the code now is P1173 exclusively. It is also seems to always happen went accelerating from a stop or slow roll. Sometimes just the ABS and Traction light will go on, and if I let off the accelerator they will go off again. Sometimes it just trips all three. Up until today it would still happen sporadically but today it happened 3-4 times on the way home.
