1998 Beetle
insert the key and turn to the ON position.
you loose all electrical power. no lights on the instrument cluster, odometer and trip go blank, radio and clock, loose everything.
continuing to turn the key to the start position, no change.

Turn the back to the off position, after a few seconds the odometer returns, the trip meter is set to zero, clock has lost time, no radio stations.

I have replaced the ignition switch, and all was fixed for one day. today I came home to find a rapid clicking sounds from under the drivers side dash. I have disconnected the battery and reconnected it to reset what ever it was.. it stopped the clicking sound

looking at my Bentley manual in the wiring section I see a couple of possible things to try next but having trouble following along.

other symptoms, maybe unrelated. convenience control module issues.

Any ideas where to "start"? What does the power supply relay , relay #12, number on relay 109 supply?

You either have a dead battery or a bad chassis ground.

Take a long jumper cable (the type used to jump a car battery) and attach one of the negative clamps of the cable to the battery negative post / clamp... open the driver door and attach the other end of the negative cable to the door latch link on the chassis (red circle in image).

If you can now start the car, remove the battery and clean the main chassis ground like in this video:
