2002 T4 Eurovan rear hatch stuck locked

Something seems to have become disengaged. The actuator is working and the key cylinder turns, but the handle doesn't open the rear hatch. The handle moves just like it does when normally locked (i.e., it's not stuck). I'm sure I can fix it if I can get the hatch apart to access all the internal parts, but is this possible with the hatch closed? Or, is there some secret way to "pop" or "jimmy" the door open from either the inside or the outside?

Oh, and, yes I know which position the key cylinder needs to be in, and I'm 100 percent sure it's in the correct position. Besides, it won't even open when using the key.

Thanks in advance for any help...

On my 2001 EuroVan Camper, there is a red plastic plug on the inner panel of the hatch. Behind this plug is a latch mechanism than when lifted will open the hatch.

I know of an easy way to unlock the rear top hinged door but don't want to publish this online for security reasons. I don't want Eurovans to be stolen. Mail me and I can tell you but promise never to publish this.
