84 vw gti double positive on fuel pump wires

My 84 gti needs a new fuel pump so I got ome and I realized both wires are positive. I have no idea why and need some advice. Thanks

If you connected the fuel pump and then jumped out the fuel pump relay in order to turn the fuel pump on, did it run? It's possible that you have a bad ground. 12V comes from the fuel pump relay and goes to the pump. If you have a bad ground then a meter will show 12V on both terminals of the fuel pump. Disconnect the terminals from the fuel pump (make sure you remove the jumper from the fuel pump relay first!). Then measure each wire to ground (using resistance scale on the meter). You should have very close to zero ohms on one of the wires.
