87 Vanagon 4 speed. I put the clutch in a few years back. Today the bolts sheered off on the right side at the flange on the trans.

I had to be towed home. I hit the VW Dealership and ordered 6 new bolts and those 3 metal straps that
were lost on the tow. Probably in the middle of the intersection.

My old diesel Vanagon did the same thing on various occasions until I lock tite the bolts in.

Do these bolts just work loose? Will I have a big issue getting the sheered bolt remains out of the threads on the flange?

Should I lock tite these bolts in also?

They should come loose with a little tap of a chisel or even just spin out with a pick.

I've never used loctite, just my 3/8" impact.

The bolts should also have lock washers... washers with little ridges in them.

Update: Replaced the flange. (when the CV let loose it sheared the bolts off, rendering 2 of the 6 threads tore up)

Starter motor was broken in 1/2, either by the force of the break, or the CV axle hit it.

Axle was replaced completely.

Total bill

$600-- slightly under

While it was up on the rack they replaced the rack boots.
