Hello, I was wondering if there is any procedure to accurately locate the vanos adjustment units on the camshafts? They can be installed and rotated 360 degrees, but there are arrows on the back side that lead me to believe they must be aligned with something. I have looked in the manual and found nothing significant in regards to this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Note, the orange paint marks are solely to highlight the marks, i didn't know how visible they would be in the photo, as this engine came to me out of time, I could not accurately mark them before replacement.

Hi Ben,

Just to confirm, the engine is the non-turbo N12? It looks like it doesn't matter. I will send you a pdf of what I have after you confirm engine application.

Thanks, Charlie

Ben,
The VANOS adjusters can be installed in any position when reinstalling. Engine timing is set by locking camshafts and crankshaft.

Be sure to install the intake adjuster on the intake camshaft, and the exhaust adjuster on the exhuast camshaft. They should not be mixed up.

Thanks Nick, I was paranoid about having the adjusters wrong and bending valves. Great to meet you this weekend at the M96 class.

Just a heads up to this, vanos timing already received a lot of complaints since last year. I saw that when I was looking for Mini automotive parts online. I can't believe with that because ever since, I don't have problems with my mini hatchback's vanos. thanks.

I do not seem to have a problem with vanos adjustment units when I used to drive a BMW car, but one of my co-workers had the same problem with it with a 2009 Mini hatchback. It is a great technology that was introduced by BMW M series in the early 1990s. It enhances emission management, increases output and torque and offers better fuel economy. And it is good to know that the Mini car has it, too, as part of its engine mechanism. My co-worker has reportedly sought help from the local distributor to check on his carís vanos adjustment units, in case he could not locate these properly.

Hi Charlie,

i am having the same issue with the timing. Can you possibly send me pdf of how to correctly set camshafts?
Looks like there are 2 position where the special cam tool can go and i'm researching on the correct one.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My mini is 2007 NON turbo.

thank you
