Hello,
I want to buy a Autometer Ultra-Lite fuel gauge to add to my 82 Rabbit Diesel.
Can you tell me what the ohm range is for the stock sending unit is. 0-90?
Thanx in advance

55 full, 560 empty.... attach some resistors across the sender harness plug to confirm.

I just read in the Bentley Manual that the numbers listed do not represent ohm figures... see attached image. Numbers are also different from what the VW PDF I looked at yesterday.
You'll have to test the old one with an ohm meter.

Just use a meter to get the readings, if you can. If the readings are much higher than the gauges you are looking at I can help you. Tell me what readings you get. You can put resistors in parallel to decrease the total resistance.

TY Thomas...I will be taking it apart this weekend, I will let you know. I can get to the fuel sender from under the backseat in my Rabbit, a friend was telling me. That true?

Ummm...if it's a convertible then, yes. Just two phillips screws to remove the back seat. There's a cover. Three more screws. Then you'll see the connector. Remove it. The last cover is 1/4 turn to pop it loose and the whole shebang comes out. Only two wires on the connector. Just read the full and empty values. Read them 2-3 times to make sure you've not hit a sticky part.

Ty again Thomas,
I found the access under the rear seat on my 82 rabbit diesel. When I opened the access panel I saw that the purple lead to the sender was broken. I fixed the lead, relocated the ground to a tested ground spot and now my gauge works. Well sorta works...I know I am topped off but the gauge is reading 3/4. Anyway to trouble shoot that? Ty again for all your help!

Super important that you know ground is actually ground and making a good connection. That's where you start.
There are two wires, as you've noted. Simply remove the connector and jumper the two wires together. That simulates a (VERY!) full tank. The gauge should go to FULL. If it doesn't, the problem lies in the gauge, wiring, cluster grounds. If it does indicate full, then the problem is in the sender. Again, you need to be super sure that you have a good ground on the sender. Even a few ohms of resistance prevents the gauge from reading full. Ensure that you have your frame to engine strap connected (usually located by the coil on the firewall and connects to the valve cover) and ensure that the battery cable negative connects to the body and the transmission and that these are clean and tight.
