Steering wheel locked, ignition will not turn

Steering wheel is locked, and no matter how much I try to force it while turning the ignition switch, it will not turn. Internet forums say that bmw are prone to steering lock cylinder failure, however the Bentley manual, does not cover this subject. Any advise on how I can fix/ check this issue?

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious but can you turn the steering wheel left or right 5 or 10 degrees to take the load off the locking pin and then unlock the ignition?

thus simple call lock smith and will help you BMW will tell you you need a new ignition and a new key this just happened to me and was fixed by lock smith for ZAR280.00 thus it. he will just drill behind the steering after that it will turn an go without spending a fourtune.
