Intermittent stall/rough idle while decelerating

1998 Audi A4 Quatro with 2.8L frequently comes close to stalling or stalls when coming to a stop. A shop replaced the brake boost but that didn't fix anything. I verified that it occurs regardless of brake depression. It's intermittent and doesn't set any codes. Any ideas?

I have an Audi in with the same complaint. I am cleaning the throttle body and relearning it. Check the MAF sensor readings and make sure cam timing is correct.

My 1998 A4 2.8L(6 cyl) had started rough idling under 900 RPM. So much so that I could feel the car vibrating. (Disclosure: I do not represent any manufacture or product). I went to my local Meijer and bought 10oz of Motorkote friction modifier and a bottle of the Motorkote fuel treatment to clean the fuel injectors. Within 10 miles the Auid was purring again. I have gone 200 miles now and the vibration is still not completely gone but it no longer feels like the car is going to stall. I have 4 other cars 3 of which are diesels. After putting 12oz of Motorkote in each diesel they ran smoother. My T&C Chrysler mini-DO-IT-ALL-van runs smooth already so the added Motorkote was not as dramatic. Cost for the Fuel (gas & diesel) $10 and 10oz oil treatment for $18. I bought the Gallon (128oz) for $88 and a 12oz measuring cup to treated my other cars.
At 200 mile my fuel gauge is at half way. It has been a long time since I have seen that. So! I am assuming that Motorkotes promise of better fuel mileage is true, but all I wanted was a smoother ride. NOTE: Meijer is the only store in my area (Chicago) that sells MotorKote.
In the past I have used Chevrons Techron concentrated fuel cleaner with good results to clean fuel injectors. The bottom line is you pay for what you get Techron, Motorkote, Royal Purple all cost more but they work. Try the $30 Motorkote oil & fuel treatment before going to any shop or dealer.

I recently had an Audi specialist change my timing belt & water pump. The car went from 13mpg to 18mpg with the timing belt change. So I knew my timing was not the issue. The rough idling was accompanied by hard starts after the car was warm. Both are gone after using Motorkote, well OK the rough idling has quieted down. I don't use the Audi recommended 91 octane petro. I use more affordable 87 octane and maybe that can explain away some of the idling but the recent sub-600 RPM idling felt like the car was going to stall. I consider Motorkote part of my automotive family now and in a few weeks will add it to my diferentral and my 5 speed manual trans.

I changed the MAF after taking some readings which indicated it was just below spec, but that unfortunately didn't correct the issue. I also put in another bottle of Techron Fuel injector cleaner to no avail. I guess my next step is the throttle body which I guess wil have to be done at shop.
Just for clarification, as the car slows to a stop (even when I shift to neutral and don't press the brake), the idle drops down to 400 or below and engine shutters as if to about to stall. After about 5 to 10 seconds, the idle picks back up to 700 - 800 and seems fine. It has stalled a couple times while slowing to make a turn, which really stinks when you suddenly loose power steering and are in a turn.
Thanks for advice and I'll post the final outcome on this thread for anyone's future reference.

It could be one of ten areas:
1) Air Filter - If the air filter is clogged the car will pull air in thru snow bypass door
2) Spark Plugs - I recommend a change interval of 10,000 miles/US and usage of Platinum multi-point plugs (2 or more prongs)
3) Fuel Injectors - Techron Complete, Motrokote fuel, or even ATF fluid work well to clean injectors. Just add to fuel tank before filling up.
4) Bosch Lambda / Oxygen sensor - 4cyl 1.8L has 2 / 6cyl 2.8L has 4x O2 sensors - should be changed after 100,000 miles/US. Usually the ECU will give you a CEL to indicate O2 sensor failure.
5) Clutch - Clutch could have wear dis-function usually occurring before clutch goes out completely
6) Vacume line disconnected or broken - recommended replacing vacume lines with 100% silicon lines after 100,000 miles/US. Replacing lines is the best way to find a leak.
7) IAC (idle air control/Stabilizer valve) - If you report idle problems to Audi, they will replace this item first but it is very expensive and often does not solve the problem. You can check and clean it easily.
8) Ignition coil packs - They have been known to randomly crack, bad Bremi coils have cause intermittent idle/stalling because sparks never make it to the Cylinder.
9) Throttle Body Dirty and/or mis-Alignment - Remove black air hose and clean butterfly. To realign or check alignment you need a VAG-Com. Watch Youtube link (www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVEz7it48s8)
10) MAF (mass air flow sensor) - the MAF rarely are the problem, but people focus on them because they do control rpm and fueling. Contrary to what the dealer tells you MAF's are cleanable. You should never touch the wires inside the sensor because of the oils on your fingers. Autozone sales a MAF cleaner spray and it works very well. Just follow the instructions.
If the car does start stalling I would:
1) Check for misfires - Using VAG-Com you can easily check for misfires (www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fyUyXgJMtY)
2) Check and/or Change - change my spark plugs to platinum 2 or 3 prong plugs and focus on the Coil packs, the spark plug wires, and inspect/clean the IAC (idle air control/Stabilizer valve).
3) Add 10oz of Motorkote oil additive just to ease the day-to-day stress on my engine. Motorkote really works sold at Meijer or Truck stops.

Problem was fixed by cleaning the throttle body, relearning it, and cleaning a vacuum nipple for PCV system that was just about completely plugged up. Runs like a champ now.
Also, there is a technical service bulletin out titled "ENGINE, FLUCTUATING IDLE OR IDLE SPEED TOO LOW". It's reference number is Group 24, NO. 08-81 (2005592/3) dated 9 December 2008 for Audi 1998-2001 A4, A6 with engine code AHA and ATQ.
Thanks to everyone who replied to the thread.
