71 Beetle fuel cut-ff switch diagnosis

Hello! Out there. I need to know how to check and diagnos the fuel cut-off switch. and also what are
symptoms that the switch is bad.

Stuck closed, no idle.

Stuck open, possible run-on on shut down (hot engine, needs ignition source from hot carbon).

Remove solenoid, hold body to ground, apply power to connector end.

  • solenoid needs to click every time power is applied
  • look at tip of solenoid
  • you should see a plunger move (through the little port holes) every time the solenoid is energized.
  • open passage when energized, restricted passage when not

Sorry, I may have been thinking old style solenoid... if your solenoid has a plunger with no housing around it, the plunger just needs to move. Basically same operation... I can post pics of different styles later.
