My car sometimes wont crank when I turn the key. 3 or 4 times trying is normal. Yesterday I got stuck for an hour. I have ordered a new starter relay 3A0 927181, but dont find it in the fuse/relay box. According to ETKA, the relay looks like its mounted at another location.
Does someone know where the relay is located? A picture would be nice as panic is stting in now because of the holiday season and risk getting stuck at home for 2 weeks.
1997 VR6 auto trans Eurovan.

Have you verified that it isn't the ignition switch? There's a long history of these going bad (electrical portion) - so I always check that first.

I always carry a spare ignition switch and many relays in my toolbox. I am going to change the ignition switch anyway and keep the starter relay as a spare.
I dont fancy a VW dealer far away from hom charge me 200 doillars an hour for som apprentice to find the fault for me, therefore preventive maintainance and replacement.
This car has done 300,000 km and all the engine and gearbox sensors have been replaced.
I also carry the 167 for the fuel pump. For those of you who drive a diesel a 109 is a must carry spare.

I had this problem before and bought the relay but never found a similar relay under the dash. It was so cramped there that I had ro remove the metal bar keeping the relay plate in place and pulled out all the long relays and put them back in.
No problems since.
You can check the area around the transmission control unit which is under the carpet on the left inner fender.

It's behind the heater switches on the dash, pop off the cover plastic, then remove the 4 screws holding the heater controls in place and then pull that out you will then see it on the far right.
