I have a 1998 528i E39 automatic. I have only had the car since April. I have been making repairs slowly. I have a code P1761 Shift Lock Solenoid. This I remember reading some were puts the transmission in safty mode. I replaced the break switch and and the solenoid on the shifter, and it's still not working. Is there a relay or another check I can preform? What should be my next steps? Is there a way to get the transmission out of safty mode, a reset procedure maybe? I want to try everything before i start taking thing apart to check the wiring.

I have heard of many different procedures on how to reset systems on the car. Is there a book on these or what is recommended.

Can you move the shift lever or is it stuck in park. The lever is connected by a cable to the ignition switch. I have had a problem with mine on occasion. if you pull the shift lever gaitor up there is a mechanism to the right that you can lift to release the shift lever. Mine just needed adjusting.

Do you get the indicator in the instrument to show right gear ??

There is a commen problem with fuse 15 check it, it is fore the gearindicator, if you get a shortcut in the oillevelsensor the fuse 15 blows and you cant start the car becuse the indictaor dont work. It the fuse is blown, take away the contackt to oillevelsensor and put in a new 15 fuse.(Change the oillevel sensor next time you change oil

The indicator does show the correct gear. the one thing i do see as odd is the indicator light stays on in park after engine is off and the key is off. checked fuse 15, it is listed as the engine control it was not blown.

I have had the same problem, except the shift would not move out of park.

Thanks
