Hi
When i turn key to start all instruments light up, but car don't attempt to start. Have been checking and I think ignition switch is broken since i don't get any voltage on the black and yellow cord on the starter. Anyone had same problem or know if there is safe to take a cord from battery and on the black/yellow cord to test my theory?

Hi, I am dealing with somewhat same situation. I just like to explain to you how the key on Bmw really works. The remote keys have a chip in the key that send out codes to the EWS. When you insert the key in the ignition and switch to accessories. Then the key releases a code that gets picked up by the ring antenna, that is located around your ignition switch. This antenna sends the code to the EWS. The EWS is the security decoder computer located behind the glove box. The EWS has to accept the code to allow the CMD to release the lock on your fuel injectors and reinstate the power to the starter. If all these systems work then your car will start.
1. The chip in your car key is not working. Solution is to try your spare key or order a new wallet key and see if the car starts.
2. If that fails your ring antenna might be faulty. Not likely.
3. Your EWS and your DME are not communicating properly. Solution let BMW dealership reprogram EWS and DME.
4. Your EWS has broken down and need replacement. 110 dollars and initialization to your car. Probably total cost 300.00.
5. Run a positive wire from your battery to your starter to check starter. I have never done that, so do some more research about that subject.
Hope this is helpful.

tried all 3 keys and none of them work. there are no fault codes when we connect a computer to the car. talked with an electric expert and decided to dismount the starter from the car and let him check the starter if it's faulty or not..

Note that connecting a generic OBD code reader to the car won't reveal any faults in the EWS system - you need one of the BMW dealer tools or something like the durametric SW.
Does wiggling and tugging on the key when trying to start the car have any effect? Does everything else appear to work as it should when the key is set to run (headlamps, reverse lamps, instruments, etc) Does the EWS warning lamp in the dash go out after a few seconds or does it stay lit?
