Ok
I have a 1984 Rabbit Diesel L 1.6
so here's the deal:
this is happening again - only worse....
I replaced the headlight switch about 1+ years ago after trying to fix the old on numerous times
here the scenario: while driving (at night) my head lights would turn off, when push/puling on the switch they would often come back on.

I had also taken apart and cleaned the terminals in the high-beam/ turn signal switch in the steering column.

Still to this day I can not seem to find a fuse for head lights- nor a relay not listed on page 146
in the Bentley manual

flash forward to a few nights ago:
I got off work at about 10pm and go to drive home and turn the lights on - no dice no lowbeams... ( I do have auxiliary fog lights) I fiddled with things on the fuse block and referred to the manual, and some relays, eventually the lowbeams came on!

tonight same thing but no lowbeams
I did notice that the high beams would come on - but only on momentary ( I had to hold the switch on to keep them on) . I decided after about 40 minutes of fiddling, that OI would drive home using my fog lights.
mind you all my other lights- parking / instrument panel - all work fine!

so right at my exit off the highway - all of a sudden my high-beams came on. I clicked the high beam switch and turned them off - then my headlights stayed on for the last couple of minutes of my drive from Ashland to Medford!

this would lead me to believe that it is the high beam switch... but
I thought I'd ask others to see there take on it????
can I fix it - or get a new one- are they even available? or is it something else?

thanx

I don't have a wiring diagram handy... best thing to do is confirm power at the headlight switch.

Power from the ignition switch x circuit (that's the circuit that triggers the load reduction relay) is fed to the switch, there should also be a hot-all-the-time wire.

Try to manually supply power to the high or low beam wires at the steering column (see wiring diagram for which ones do what).

To me it sounds like a bad ignition switch or a bad connection some where.

Might have more ideas later tonight.

Ok
so I seemed to have fixed my issue, by replacing the Turn signal / High Beam switch.

the symptoms continued a number of times, always leading back to the high beam switch.
got a replacement and since then I have had no issues (knock on wood).

Ok So my troubles are back again!
Grrrrrrrr.....

it still seems that even the new highbeam switch is a bit funky, as not it will only momentary on, and not click (lock) into highbeam. When this happens as it is now, the low beams won't light.
all other lights are fine.

on a side note a while back when I go to start the car I can hear my glowplug relay click on, but it doesn't seem to energize the glow plugs, I need to do a hot jump from the battery to my glow plug bridge to start my diesel - each time unless the engine is hot.
I have not changes the strip fuse yet , but it "appears" to be ok on visiual inspection.

could both be related to a ground issue?

It appears that the X-relay is ok, as my blower and wipers function correctly.
but I can try swapping it out again too.

any insights?

thank you
