Hi

I had my clutch cable replaced two weeks as it was make creaking noises when depressed (don't we all...; )Plus it was very stiff, and wasn't very smooth. The new cable was a dream for about a week of light driving.I then noticed it wasn't as smooth anymore, then the creaking sounds started again. Why?! Is it tightening itself up? Clutch Master cylinder? The clutch itself is fairly new, but was done before I bought it 3 mos ago. What could cause a new cable to act this way so soon?

Thanks for any insights!

Hello, Madasahatter

Are you sure the creaking is the cable? I've never heard of a cable creaking. Maybe it's the clutch pedal itself?

It could be the pedal...I sprayed the heck out of it under there yesterday, and it was quiet...for about a 1/2 hour...I'm taking it in to a shop today,I was hoping to go in armed with some more knowledge...They likely will want to replace the pressure plate and so on first....

Do only hydraulic clutches have master cylinders..It feels like a bushing is sezing,or a spring is bunged up...Weird....

Hello again

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I just took a look at the book. http://www.bentleypublishers.com/isbn/9780837603667/index.html

I'm going to guess from your description so far that you have an 020 code transmission. The book shows that the 020 has a cable-operated clutch while the 02A has a hydraulic clutch. It should be one or the other, and in your case, it looks like cable-operated.

What was your reference for installing the cable? The book above shows installation and adjustment procedures. Incidentally, the book also references lubricating "all bearing and friction surfaces with MoS2 grease (VW Part No. G 000 602)".

There is also a section on repairing a faulty clutch cable adjustment mechanism.

Hi and thanks for your input.

I had the work done at a VW specialty shop (not a VW dealer). Anyways, they were concinced it was the cable, but after changing it out they decided to look at the pedal itself, and are now saying the spring is the culprit. After greasing the exact spot where the spring contacts the pedal assembly, the noise dissapears, until the grease wears off, usually about 10 mins later!
I hate to admit it, but I don't own the Bentley manual, but just purchased it online today, and will have it next week....

Does the manual have a section on how to re/re the clutch pedal spring mechanism? Any idea of level of diifficulty?

ALSO..This car is new to me,and I was surprised that it seemed to not have DRL's..I even had it checked out by an auto electric shop nearby, and they said they can find no relays to indicate it was equipped with them. Well today for some reason, I noticed that they were indeed on!!! I lifted the hand brake, they went off, lowered it back,on they came.Shut the car off...Later started it, and they don't come on any more! Were would I start with this issue?!

Thanks so much.

The sping you mention is the over center spring.....

You need to apply grease to BOTH the spring coils and the places it contacts with the pedal assembly ...

You need to use a heavy duty moly based grease ..not the ordinary lithium kind....
Actually I have found that the same grease you use in the CV joints works best here becuase it won't "wear off" under heavy pressure.

Lubromoly has the stuff that works best.

The stuff never goes away. VW likes to use this kind of grease lots of places...it even works well on the door check rods on our cars ...

Well the moly grease didn't help.Coated the springs at the pedal contact point.I think maybe the nylon end of the spring has become worn,it's very noisy still..Oh well...thanks anyways tho.

Update...removed the over center spring to replace it..Then I noticed the pedal still creaks just as bad,if not worse. It seems the bushing is worn? Have ordered the part...BTW...both shops where I service my vehicle estimated the spring would take about 1 1/2 hrs for labour to re/re...I did it in 5 mins, with very little effort, other than laying on my back across the door jam....

Well, changed the spring out and lubed the top of the pedal where the cable attaches, and the sound is gone! Finally! Only took a month and four trips to the shop for parts, but hey!
