I have a 98 audi aeb and i had to replace motor. I removed torque to empty fluid because i wanted to get new fluid in there. I then emptied the pan and filled it with 2.5l of new fluid. I started the car and moved through all gears and then checked fluid. It started to drip right out, but I have no gears at all. I've changed 3 trannys in jeeps and they have all sucked the fluid up. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help.

I don't work on automatics, but... did you fill the converter before installing?
Bentley lists ATF Fluid capacity at 9 liters (whole system) and 2.6L for just a change.
I assume that the ATF pump is driven by the converter (again, I don't work on automatics)... if the converter is empty, the pump will not pump/suck fluid.
The only other thing I can think of (that would cause no gear symptoms) is a disconnected driveshaft.

Are you sure you have enough fluid in it? Anytime you take the plug out you will get some dripping, but when its full the fluid should come out is a stream. Did you have problems getting the torque convertor bolted up or the engine back all the way? Convertors have never been fun to get fully seated, but some of these newer cars with multiple spline shafts can be really hard to get.

This is my fourth tranny swap, so no probs with converter seating. I did my grand which is a real pita three times (dont ask its a jeep thing haha) and never had a problem. Motor lined right up with no probs. The tc was empty when i installed it so maybe i have to get it back out and fill it up and see what that does. It doesnt seem like its pumping but there are no leaks so the pump seal and housing should be good then.

I just took a quick look at the Bentley CD... see attached images.
It looks like the pump is turned by the Torque converter (even if it is empty) via the two cut-outs at the end of the torque converter shaft.
So it's the lack of fluid inside the converter that is keeping the Turbine from spinning the transmission input shaft.
Whether or not the pump will eventually fill the converter just by idling... I don't know.

You think i should try to fill the tc first before i swap tranmission. It will be a pain to even get the tranny out to fill the tc and i dont want to fill it and reinstall to find out its damaged. If so i could try that to see what will happen. All other cars ive switched they've automatically picked up though. Thanks guys for all your help.
