Cooling System fill procedure

On a 2006 A3, 2.0T 4 cyl., anyone have any experience with refilling the system the old fashioned way, just pull the highest hose and fill until it starts to run out there? I don't have an air compressor for the vacuum fill procedure in the manual and trying to figure out if the old way would work.
