Does any know if you can replace a radiator fan from a vanagon 1989 model without a/c with a radiator fan from the same model with a/c. If not, does anyone know where can I get a new radiator fan for my vanagon with out a/c.

If I'm not mistaken it's the same fan setup.

Are you sure the fan needs replacing? What is the problem?

There are two diffreent fans. The one for no A/C is a two-speed fan with two different coil inputs for the three speeds (3-wire connection). The fan for A/C models is actually a single-speed motor with two connections, and the speeds are controlled by an external resistor network. So you need the non-A/C two speed fan. It is available from Busdepot:

(Note it says EXCEPT 86-91 WITH A/C)

Thanks for your help, the low speed fan doesn't come on, only the really loud speed.

Thanks Tom, I've tried busdepot (their great) but unfortunately they don't have the 86-90 fan without a/c either. They said they don't think they will get them in again, but have put me on a wait list just in case.

If you've got only the hi speed, it's not the fan motor. It's the series resistor behind the left (driver's side) head lite. Pull the assembly out and you
will see the resistor pack. Relacing the resistor pack should restore both fan speeds.

I don't think the non-AC version uses the resistor pack, since the fan motor has different + connections for high and low speeds. The AC version has a single + connection, and uses the resistor pack to get multiple speeds.

Yeah, you're right. But like I said, "if I'm not mistaken." And I was.

Hi, I just discovered this site. It is awesome. I have a 87 Vanagon WITHOUT A/C. My problem is that only my Loud high speed fan setting works. The other speed(s) do not work. Anyone have the solution?

Thank in advance

Hello, Nikko

There were two radiator fan setups used on watercooled Vanagons. Your 1987 Vanagon (without A/C) would have used the older two-speed setup. If you're sure that the fan itself is not the problem, and that the fuse and wiring are not suspect, I'd take a look at the temperature sensors. There should be two - one on the radiator and one on the thermostat housing.

A very good explanation of the radiator fan system can be seen here:

Thank u very much for the straightforward answer. I have been searching high and low for the info I got from you. I will check those sensors. What fuse(s) should I check?
