My 2000 Audi A4 1.8 has just reached a hundred thousand miles about six months ago it started making a clicking noise when setting off in first gear then again when selecting 2nd but not 3rd and 4th, now its a clunking and slightly creaking noise, the more i put my foot down the louder the clunk it really sounds like something banging against the body.Things I have tried so far are
New Outer C/V joints . New engine mounts. checked gearbox mounts and had a good look at subframe mounts. New CAT and exhaust system checked, there is no suspension noises over bumpy ground. Can somebody please help ?

What have you meant by this?
"the more i put my foot down the louder the clunk it really sounds like something banging against the body"
Do you mean when accelerate? what speed? does it occur in neutral? rpm depended? rhythmic noise? are you able to determine where is coming from, front, center or rear of the vehicle? involvement in accident? are you sure it's not coming from transmission? how about prop. shaft center bearing if is a quatro? i would go there..

Double check front stop buffer/torque mounting or RH hydro mounting.

Bounce the front of your car up and down, or go over a speed bump at 5~10 MPH and listen for any of the noise that you describe. If you hear the noise that way, there may be bad balljoints. You'll hear the noise in first as you accelerate, because the front end lifts slightly. when you shift to second, the change in torque moves it down and up again. Bresha mentions the mounts. You can open the hood, and watch the engine move as someone else attempts to move forward, then backwards, with the parking brake on. I had a terrible clunk on our Passat, due to transmission mounts, and the movement of the engine was really impressive!
