Hi, I have a 528i 1997 and I bought the vanos test lead to check the proper setting on the Vanos. I have the bentley manual but still confused about some stuff. The manual tells you to connect compressed air to the Vanos unit 30-110 psi.Does this mean any setting between 30 and 110 is fine or do you have to gradually bring up the pressure from 30 to 110.
The second question i have is that the manual mentioned that the engine TDC pin needs to be installed. It does not mention to install the camshaft locking tool, but at the end it tells me to remove the camshaft locking tool. Do they both need to be installed? I just like to feel more comfortable with the Vanos system. Does someone have experience doing this test on the vanos?

The spec. is 2-8 bar. so I would just use the 2 bar, maybe slightly more. No meed to over pressurize. The camshaft needs to move during this check, so all locking tools should be removed. Let us know if you have any other issues and thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Thank you Charlie I do have another question for you. The sprocket spanner wrench needs to rotate the exhaust sprocket.Do they mean to rotate the fastener bolts from the left side to the right side in the sleeve they are in? How can it rotate the intake sprocket with the locking tools in place to install the vanos unit?

What page are you referencing? It just puts the sprockets against the stops in the elongated holes.
