I have a 1999 Beetle GLS,

I recently got in it and the ABS light stayed on, then brake light started flashing. Also no headlights, blinkers, windshield wipers, or AC/heater. This all happened at the same time. I don't have a chiming system either (just doesn't work anymore)--as I have read other posts about the chiming with the brake situation. I have a really good mechanic, but he doesn't have testing equipment for my car. Any suggestions? Should I pay the rediculous price for VW to test it? Please help. Thanks

Not positive about the ABS being tied in, but the other issues sound like a bad ignition switch. Try wiggling the key around and see if the accessories start working again.

Check the auxiliary fuse holder on top of the battery and check all fuses. It seems to me there is multiple issues with your vehicle and the ignition switch as suggested is very good start.

My 99 GLS just started doing the exact same thing last night. Did you find out what it was? HELP!

I would get a scan done to find out if the ABS light and brake light flashing indicate a failure of the ABS module. If they find a trouble code for the ABS system, you most likely have a failed ABS module which seems to be a really common problem. The trouble code for our Beetle indicated a ABS pump problem, but it was actually the module that was at fault. Fortunately, this module can be rebuilt inexpensively and will be better than buying a new one. An ABS module failure can also cause an erratic speedometer and/or cruise control, but the ignition switch and fuse suggestions sound like good places to start for the other problems. Like Bresha said, it sounds like more than one issue.
