Hi,

I Have an 02 Audi A4 3.0, and a couple months ago my timing belt went out. THe Belt did not actually break alot of teeth just sheered off or wore out. I was driving when the check engine light came on and I made it home the car had minor vibration but not too terrible missfire(like when 2 of my ignition coils went out last year). After I made it home the car did not start so I started poking around and took the top cover to the timing belt off because I was already at 84K miles and I saw the problem :| I have replaced the belt. During the replacement the cams where off time and the tool would not fit and you couldnt rotate the engine because you could hear and feel it the valve hit the piston head, so I had to just place it at TDC mark remove the belt and then turn the cams until I got the tool in. I can turn the engine no problem turns smooth with no interference but I did hear some clicking (a kind of loud) round cam/valve area on cylinder 2 or 3 only. I though maybe it did it cause there isnt enough oil in the area???.........well I assembled everything and the car wont start it just sits there and cranks. Any ideas or suggestions from anyone. One other thing before I decided to change the belt myself the car just sat in the drive way for about 3 months. I would appreciate any help or ideas.

You will most likely need a lot more than just a timing belt service.

Sounds like bent valves, at least.

Ditto. If the belt breaks or strips out it doesn't matter, the engine is out of time either way. You may "only" have bent valves in one or 2 cylinders on one head, but to know that you need to replace the belt and then do a compression test on the engine.

I would not recommend compression test because of engine cranking and making a further damage to it, best way would be to do leak down test and of course rotating by hand, That way you be able to determine piston to valve damage if so. 3.0 liter engine required special alignment tool and no timing belt replacement recommended without the tool.
