Stuck in park and revs up in reverse

Hi
I have an Audi A6 2.0 litre TDI 2006 model that sometimes get stuck in park.
When this happens I use the emergency release to get going.
The display P R N D stops working in the instrument panel and it seems to rev high when reversing.
Any ideas?
Thanks Hobson.

Hobson,
Best thing to do is to scan transmission electronics if it's possible and post the fault codes.
You might check the brake switch as well - one of the cause for stuck in park, but will not cause gear indicator going blank.

Hi Bresha
I have fault code p1119 in the ABS and p7090 in the transmission, both refer to transmission range sensor.
This sticking in park is intermittant as sometimes all works ok. It will work fine until I put it in park then the display goes blank and shift lock solenoid stops working.
When all is working fine it will still rev too high in reverse so possible seperate faults?
Brake lights always work.
Already had a new shift lock solenoid.
Car has done 110,000 miles.
Any ideas?

Hobson.

Hobson,
Strange fault code P7090, Mistyped possibly, you sure you do not have 17090 - multifunction switch implausible signal, if so i would inspect wiring to Multifunction switch or trans.range switch, or you have faulty trans. range switch.
Shift solenoid would not cause gear display go blank.Good luck.

Hi Bresha
Yes the code you say is the right one.
Is the multifunction switch the electronic panel around the gear lever or is there another one inside the transmission?
When the fault occurs and the instrument panel display fails, the display next to the gear shift lever still works as if that display gets its signal from a different sensor to the sensor thats failing,
Or possibly two circuits in that electronic panel around the gear lever?
The display next to the lever connects directly to the electronic panel surrounding the lever.

Hi Hobson,
Instrument cluster gear indicator failure is caused most of the time by faulty wiring or Transmission range sensor assembly located on transmission. Electronic circuit board around the shifter lever usually would not cause blank gear indicator on IC but would cause transmission limp mode if the signals from trans. range and shifter lever are not synchronized.
Like i said previously wiring test is required to eliminate wiring issue and pin point to Trans. range switch. i would eliminate TCM at this time.
By the way i guess you are not in USA, as far i know we do not have 06 Audi's TDI here or i mistaking. Good luck.
