I have a 325I convertible, that just started lighting the check engine light. I recently swapped out the automatic trans for a manual trans, all went well even though the job was a pain. The light did not start to light for 3 days after the swap , so I do not think they are related. I checked the O2 sensor because it was one of the only thinks I touched that I think is related to check engine. Can runs fine. Light come on and off , never turning off without cycling the key. I have a Bav Auto code reader, but in this car I get "E erros" which the manual says in something holding down the buss, so the tool can not read the faults. This condition was always there at least for the past 3-4 years.I guess my question is can I ignore the light and shoot it slowly based on info I get on the forum, or am I doing more harm than good. I want to use the car this week end for a couple hundred mile trip and don't want to miss an early warning sign... Any hints would be appreciated.

what pedal codes do you get
the problem might be that the DME is looking for the trans control unit

Right now the light is off, As soon as it returns I'll try the gas pedal trick. Is this the correct procedure, to be honest, I did'n't even try it,
1) turn the key to on, do not start engine.
2) press and release gas pedal 5 times all the way to the
floor in about 5 seconds.
3) the check engine light should start flashing the
trouble codes.
I guess you need to make the full throttle switch 5 times in a short periord of time right?

Skip, 2 questions... Light has still not returned.
1. Are the codes still available without the check engine light lit.
2. I started the car while I was doing the trans swap to check the park switch rewire and also to make sure the trans acted normal before I installed the drive train. Could the CE light have gotten set from the O2 sensor being disconnected and not showed up for a couple key sequences?
Again thanks for your help - Nick

As I understand it, the "stomp test" procedure only works for '88 and newer E30.
I just tried on my '87 325is with no luck.

OBD1 cars the fault must be present to have the light on, if the light is off and it is running ok I wouldn't worry about it. I think any year with a CEL will use the stomp test
