I am just starting a body off restoration on a 79 convertible. Is there supposed to be an EGR on this years fuel injection? It is disconnected and plugged The bently service manual is a little fuzzy on whether there is supposed to be one installed for this year.

I believe VW had California-only models with egr on both the Beetle and Bus in the late 70s. Same models for the rest of the country did not have it. Sounds like it was originally a CA car.

Thanks TomB... I had heard the car was a one owner in the Seattle area. I bought it from my grandson who bought it from a guy that supposedly overhauled the engine. Upon checking the serial numbers, it looks like the engine may have come from a car a year older. As you say maybe from a CA car. That would explaing the plugging off of the EGR. I am pondering whether to dump it and just go with a factory rebuilt or new engine. Since I plan it to be a collector car, I will probably just leave it disconnected.

Since September 1979 I'm owner in Germany of a 79 Super Beetle Convertible with fuel injection made for the United States. All Bugs since Model Year 1975 manufactured for the United States, Canada and Japan are equipped with Bosch fuel injection and Exhaust Gas Recirculation. But the EGR for California is different from those for the rest of the United States. For further informations please contact me. Sorry but my English isn't the best.

To: hartmut273 Thanks for the information. I would be interested in knowing if I should hook up the EGR. The car was used in the Seattle area and not in California so it could have been hooked up differently or not at all. I don't know.

Also I found the wire from the auxillary air regulator connector disconnected and wound up around the hood hinge in the engine compartment. I haven't looked to see where it goes yet. Do you know? Thanks and your english is perfect....Carlin

I've seen lots of fuel injected cars with the EGR disconnected that still run fine. Not sure about the auxilliary air regulator though.

EGR may be necessary to have in place if the vehicle has to pass any kind of emmission testing, i.e. California perhaps.
