I am replacing the cvt transmission on an 2003 Mini cooper. Curious if anyone on the forum has done this job that can give any tips. Replacing the transmission is not an issue the remove and replace that is. I'm wondering about adding fluid to the new transmission and about clutch adaptation learning. I have read in the Mini diagnosis without guess work on the re adaptation procedure. I will be preforming that as well. Thanks

There are drain and fill plugs on the transmission for the fluid.

Only tough part, (assuming you do not have a lift) will be removing the front subframe.

Do you have Bentley's MINI repair manual?

Yes I have the manual. We have a lift the r/r is almost done.. From reading the manual. It says pump 4.5 quarts in. run in all gears. Check fluid level by pulling fill plug back out should the engine be running to check fluid level. Manual does not say.

I am an owner of a 2006 Mini-Copper, the CVT transmission failed at 112,000 miles. The transmission slowly would not come out of low gear, I had it towed to a reputable transmission shop. (I still owe $14,000)

With further examination, it was found that the transmission fluid was black not that pinkish color anymore. Of course, the warranty expired long ago, a used transmission was $5000 with a 2 year warranty. This is upsetting, after reading many complaints from folks with CVT transmission problems. You would think BMW would recall these unreliable units.

Either, I have to locate a good used unit or sacrifice the Mini.
