Thumping sound upon heavy throttle

My '00 Passat w/V-6 and 5-speed manual transmission makes a thumping sound that I can feel when I accelerate heavily. It thumps one to three times in first, then occasionally thumps once in second.

If I accelerate moderately, it doesn't thump nearly as much if at all.

I thought it may be motor mounts, but would those cause it to thump multiple times? Also, I thought about clutch slip but there are no other indications that slip is happening.

Any comments are most welcome.

Probably the outer CV joint of the drive axle. They 'clunk' when accelerating and at low speeds when they start to go bad, as the axle turns faster they move to center and stop the noise.

If you do it yourself here is a good place to get the part.

If you take it to a dealer or mechanic they will probably replace the entire axle at a fairly high cost.
