I have a 85 635csi. When driving the car I hear chattering , sounds like its coming from the gear shift, when the car slows down the chatters slows down also, almost as if a gear is missing a tooth. Any ideas anyone?

Those transmission were know for layshaft noise, bearings wear out and layshaft 'clunks' at low speed. Not sure it that is your noise, Try parking close to a wall (to hear the noise better), engine running in neutral trans warmed up, you hear a galloping knocking noise if it's the layshaft bearings.

Thanks Charlie, I only here the noise when the car is moving, it runs fine when its standing. It chatters both in and out of gear as long as the car is moving, once I come to a complete stop I don't hear the noise, which makes me think it has something to do with the drive train.
