Has anyone done their own clutch replacement on 1988 M6(E24). If so,what diagrams, instructional/procedural guides or books might you recommend as dealer says 8 hours labor and $800 parts for $1,600+. Any caveats about gotchas you can help me to avoid in the process, is much appreciated.

get the bentley manual for the e28 5 series. the e24s and 28s are identical except you have 2 doors and they have 4. no suprises to worry about. just be sure to reseal everything on the trans that's leaking when the trans is out. and, look at the flex disc for cracks. good time to change it is when the trans is out. same for the trans mount. good luck, chuck.

And I'll inspect all the linkage bits with rubber in them (see attachment 4,9,12,15...), especially the block mounts (#4) on the trans that hold the gear shift plate. New parts will give a really nice crisp feel.
