Good afternoon... ...I’m looking for some help.

I am replacing the H2O pump in my 1990 Audi 80 FWD ice racer and while I was at it, I started to replace the timing belt and tensioner. I’ve done t-belt replacements on many 1.8L VW, A4, UrS6 etc…
…when I put the motor to TDC with the cam mark (arrow pointing straight up), but not all the other marks lined up. Like a fool, I took the belt off and then realized this was very stupid. The dist rotor is pointing at the #1 cylinder, but I'm not certain it's at TDC. Assuming it's not, how would you go about setting correctly... ...what would the procedure be? Can anyone point me to a DIY write-up?

The belt should be almost identical to a 1.8 vdub(the early motor 85-97) The cam mark is on the rear of the cam gear and lines up with the edge of the head(valve cover off) toward the distributor, or 3:00 position. I don't like using the mark on the distributor gear in relation to the crank, I'll set it by the notch in the distributor where the center line of the rotor will point to it. For the crank, just use the flywheell mark in the hole between the engine and gearbox.

If you used a mark on the front of the cam gear, it wasn't the right one(according to my info) vw used to use multiple marks on the same gear- it was used in different engines in different places, but the same gear, so they put all the marks needed on it.
