Hi everyone,

I have been offered a 1996 golf VR6, excellent condition, only 40k miles, all extras, full service history. I have been looking at a VR6 for a while now, and this is the best price i've found so far. Only problem is the auto transmission is slipping.

A thought occured to me that instead of buying a used golf with a working auto tranny, it may work out the same price if I buy it really cheap with a faulty box, and then get it rebuilt to good standards so I can change the fluid and keep it good - as I imagine most of the gearboxes are crapping out.

I went out for a drive in it and it was slipping in the gears, not badly though.

Do any of you have an idea how much a rebuild would cost? Do you advise I go down this route? I live in the UK - the dealers want 2100+fitting. Great.

OK, tell me i'm crazy. As always, thankyou for reading!

PS: Before you say it the wife demands automatic :)
