328i Convertible Storage Compartment Top not Opening Enough

So when opening my top, everything goes fine for the first few seconds. The top unclasps at the front and the top begins to open properly. The back lifts up and the storage compartment cover opens, but not quite enough. Now, when the back of the roof comes down to begin the storage process, the top SMACKS the top of the compartment cover. It doesn't get caught, but it can't be good for any part of the mechanism. There is play in the compartment cover when it is open, I can move it with my hand. Is there an adjustment to make the compartment cover open a little more? I took apart the inside of the truck to get to the mechanisms but don't see an obvious solution such as "turn this nut to extend the travel of the rod" or something equally simple and obvious. I am nervous about messing around with anything...it has worked perfectly for 9 years and I want it that way for another 9. Ideas? Thanks.

How about lubrication? I would think an adjustment is not where you should be focusing. A weak motor or stiff linkage?

Charlie,
The motor makes no noise, emits no odor or otherise gives any indication that it is weak. I guess it could just not be working as well as it used to, but that part of the process doesn't feel any slower than it used to be. The small motor that operates the initial lift and final closure of the top sounds like it is tired, but that is a small electric motor that sounds like it is in the top at the very front. As for lubrication, you just suggest applying lube to all of the joints just in case?
I know there is a gas shock that is part of the storage cover's travel, but I don't know if that just offers shock protection and doesn't have any influence over the movement of the top.

Wish I knew more about those convertibe tops. Not too many experts out there, including me. Try searching this forum. I know there were a few convertible attachements put up, not sure if they apply though. Good luck.

Thanks Charlie. I've checked the forum and seen the PDFs you posted. They refer to the area I need, but don't address my specific concerns. I appreciate the help.

I have had this same problem on my 95 325iC for years and finally bought a new gas strut (Convertible Boot Lid Shock from Bavarian Autosport Part #51 25 8 132 679).
Problem now is finding instruction on exactly how to R&R the part for the upper end in is a blind spot that is nearly impossible to even touch with your hand.
The Bentley Manual isn't clear enough and as Charlie has said it is hard to find anyone with experience in this area. Have you resolved your problem?
Thanks in advance. . .

I was able to resolve the issue by purchasing a new gas strut. The key to replacing it is removing the convertible top compartment lid (4 bolts, 2 people required) and then use a clip of some sort ( I actually think I used a small allen key) to depress the switch that tells the system the lid is closed. After doing this, you can open the trunk and have access from both above and below.
When removing the strut from the upper mount on the lid arm, the clasp holding the strut top to the arm must be pushed to the OUTSIDE of the vehicle. This will release the strut. You can then remove it from the bottom mount. replacement is the reverse of removal.
