Air Bag Warning Light on, 2007 Cooper S

I recently did some work on my '07 Cooper S to add some components to the sound system. In doing so, I had the front passenger seat out, the trim along the passenger side (with exception of the piece beside the rear seat), and the radio assembly along with the dash trim necessary to get that out. The battery was disconnected during this time, except for a short time to verify voltage on certain wires. Now that it is all back together, the Air Bag light comes on whenever I start the car, and it will not go off. I am guessing that something is disconnected somewhere, any ideas or tips on where I can start looking to troubleshoot this? The closest dealer is about 90 minutes away, so I'd really rather not go that route. Thanks!

I am not sure but it sound like you may have, at some point connected the power to do some testing before all the components were connected. If this is the case, the system will flag a code for any missing items. It will be necessary to use a factory enhanced scan tool to reset the light. I suggest recording the error code prior to resetting just in case. I use the Autoenginuity scan tool. It is lap top based. The BMW version can be had for approx $500.

Hope this helps.

You are correct, when I connected the battery to check voltages, I did not have the passenger seat reinstalled yet. If I were to disconnect the battery for an extended time (such as overnight), would this clear the code, or do I need to clear it with a scanner?

I had the same thing happen to a friend of mine on his Z3 BMW (connected the battery with seat disconnected). I had to clear the light with the scan tool. You can try disconnecting the battery to see if that will work for you. Good luck and please let us know how you make out.

Well, I disconnected the battery for over 24 hours (close to 30 hours total), and it did not reset the light. So, I guess I will need to get the scanner or take it to the dealer to have them do it. I checked on the Autoenginuity scanner, they said the updates for the 2007 MINI and BMW will not be out until March, do you know if the current software will reset it on a 2007 MINI?

That is a good question, I would guess that it should work if the SRS system is the same generation software / hardware as the previous year. The car is under warrant...have you tried the dealer? they may address the reset at no cost for you.

good luck

Haven't tried the dealer yet...they're 60+ miles away, which makes it tough to get there after work during the week. I'm thinking about getting the Autoenginuity scanner anyway....it's got a lot of features I could use on my other vehicle as well.

FYI...the Autoenginuity scan tool does not have the capability to reset the air bag light yet....the standard connector (for the OBDII) doesn't have those codes, and the BMW enhanced adaptor won't even let the software connect to the car until they come out with an update. The update to cover the 07 R56 is due out March 1 (or so I'm told). I asked about the possibility of getting a beta version, still waiting to hear back from them about that.

I have an update for anyone who is interested or is thinking about the AutoEnginuity tool.....it does NOT cover the R56 models, and they do not expect to cover them until the end of 2008 at the earliest. I got a pre-release of the March 01 software, and could not get into any of the systems. After calling them several times, I was finally told that the R56 is not supported. It would have been nice if they would have told me that BEFORE I paid close to $500 for it (based on them telling me that it would be supported in March).

I am sorry to hear that, sounds kind of shady to me. At times when I have had trouble with the autoenginuity tool, I found them to be unresponsive as well. I am hoping they will see this and try to salvage their reputation.....honesty is the best policy.

As annoyed as I am with the whole situation, I feel like I have to defend them at least a little bit. While I did have to call several times before I got a response, they did offer to refund my money or exchange the BMW enhanced option for a different one (provided I send the original one back of course). But, in my opinion, that's a cop-out. I understand them not being able to have it yet (even though it is over a year since the car has been for sale to the public), but what annoys me the most is the false information.
