Excessive tire wear and wheel alignment

I just went into my VW dealer with my 2006 Passat 2.0T at 20,540 miles to have oil changed and tires rotated. Oil and filter were changed, but was told they couldn't rotate the tires due to extreme inner tread wear and that I need 4 new tires and the car needs a subsequent four wheel alignment (a 3-4 hour job they say). This car was serviced at 15,000 miles by this dealer and the tire pressure adjusted at that time. Nothing was mentioned then about tire wear or alignment. The car is driven on quiet paved country roads by my 75 year old wife (no speed demon). I have never had a set of Michelin MXV4 all season tires wear out at 20,000 miles on a brand new car! Something is wrong here! Anyone else see this happening?

I've had bad tire wear on a few new VWs over the years - all due to poor factory alignment. Once aligned correctly they were fine.
On early Touaregs there were so many problems that VW began replacing tires under warranty, but the warranty of VWs (and nearly all cars) specifically says alignment is not covered. (Probably because it is possible for the driver to knock it out by hitting curbs, etc.)
You can try to work with your dealer/VWoA on the issue, but because with 20K miles it is possible that the alignment got "whacked" along the way, I'd just get it aligned and replace the tires. (I've been putting on the Michelin "Hydroedge" - much better wear rating and wonderful wet weather safety.)

For what it's worth, ANY new car should have a complete 4-wheel alignment done by a competent tire shop as soon as you drive off the lot.

It's $80 around here, and is money well spent. I was shocked to see just how far off the figures were for my new '08 Passat.

I guess that answers my question. I just bought a used 2008 Passat from a used car lot. The front tires are worn badly and there is a hard vibration from the uneven wear. Guess I'll follow the suggestion and buy tires and get a full alignment. Hope that solves the problem. Car only has 42K miles on it. Thanks for the tip.

You know I will have to agree with what has been said. I have a 2001 Jetta and I just bought four new tires two months ago. Already the fronts are worn so that I have to get new ones to allow for the tires to be balanced. Just 6,425 miles. The tires ought to be warranted beyond that but that is a story all its own.
