Hi!
Check the Engine Mounts.
The difference betweem Drive & Reverse Gear vibration is because one side engine mount is in better shape than the other.

Thanks, for the info on the engine mounts.I have taken a look at all the mountings on the engine and auto box and mid shaft universal joint and checked the other universals for wear. All is in order. I omitted to mention in my first posting that the idle speed drops down to about 550 rpm when drive(d)is ingaged. This is lower that normal @700-800 rpm.The vehicle then "feels" if the torque convertor has engaged as the car moves "strongly" at idle.It wants to run at the low motor rev's. However the symptom are less evident after about 30 minute's of travel I must add that the car has done 300,000 odd kilo's and I have replaced the engine wiring harness myself by replacing wire for wire where I could find damaged insulation. The above mentioned problem is not caused by my wiring as this was done at about 180,000 to 200,000 kilo's.The vibration problem has only been evident over the last 5000 kilos's.

My m/benz vibration turned out to be a bearing failure in the transmission A roller bearing broke and the resulted is a complete transmission re-build as the planetary gears have failed. So beware of that slight vibration, no noise, has cost me twice my monthly pension understand that this is a weakness in the design of the trannies fitted to the c240 and the e240 models. the newer units have an up-grade.

I have a c240 as well. 1998 with 100k Km on the ODO. doing the same thing. I was suspecting the AIRCON pully bearing because when I turn it off (A/C) the vibration dies down a bit.

Will also update when I get to the bottom of it. Just thinking that it could be the transmission sends shivors all over!

I own a C 240 1998, and when I got 100k kilometers , my M B started a vibration , I found was ignition coil failed , so got to chang, C 240 is one of best cars I ever had, I wonder this manual is intended only for other model not for C240 1998, Iam speaking of Bentley Manual ?
Many thanks
