93 Passat - won't start

I purchased a 93 Passat manual VR6 from a friend. He warned me that the car had problems starting when it was warm outside. Numerous fixes were attempted, but problem was not solved.
The car sat for 6 months and I'm attempting to start it in 40- degree weather - no luck. The engine is cranking just fine, but will not start.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

start with changing the coolant temp sensor the white one on the drivers side of the cylinder head. Then check for all vacuum/air leaks especially under the intake boot near the throttle body, there are supposed to be hoses there, often overlooked. Also look for obscured holes in lines all over the engine bay, near firewall and etc.
Pull the cold start valve from the intake if it still won't start and put it in a plastic baggie. See if it squirts fuel, if it doesn't be suspicious other injectors are not getting fuel. If they are, then check for spark, make sure you are getting a repetative spark, and that the ignition timing is correct, check wires to the distributor, and other sensors they often break get brittle short out.

I have the same car except Auto. Have over 240 K on it. Origianl owner, lots of issues with it over the last 14 years. Mine just started the same stupid thing here a few weeks ago whne the temps got real low. I have tracked it down to a relay that is some sort of Engine Control. If I push on it it makes a wierd noise like it is trying to engage the relay and chatters. When the chattering stops the engine begins to fire. The part number on it is 24.6900.10. I am searching for one. For the time being I just put some foam down their and wire tied the whole fuse assembly up and no more problems. Wish I could provide you a relay number or picts, but I lost all my stuff on a different computer after the kids wreck it.
Good luck,

Sounds like the ecu relay that is only on the 93 94 models..
That could be it...or could be a faulty wire somewhere, fault ecu...lots of different things..weird happen to these cars. I own two of them and I am working a vr6 clutch/timing chain job right now...lots of work! ****...

mine would not start with the temp. sensor unplugged. This is just something that worked for me, Disconnect the neg batt terminal, Check all the connections under the hood involving fuel, air, and water temp. With the Battery neg disconnected, ground any static charge like you would a computer, Turn the ignition to start like normal, and ground any other sources like the windows, radio, anything that would hold a memory. then Reconnect everything. then start as normal.

Update -
I checked the all connections (sensors, vacuum lines) and no luck. I was ready to order a coolant temp sensor to see if that solved the problem, but I decided to "jiggle" some wires on the wiring harness that appear to come through the drivers side firewall and connects via a large plug to another set of wires (sorry, I have no clue what the correct terms are). Well - the car started and ran like a charm. The next morning, I'm back to square one - car won't start. I played with the wires/plug again, no luck. Any suggestions??
Thanks

might just be a coincidence perhaps the ignition switch is going bad. Check for spark fuel... and you will have a better idea of what is happening.

I'm back to square one. The car starts and runs like a champ for a week or so and then decides not to start. It may start in the morning and then not start again for a week - OR it may start every time for weeks at a time... Hot/cold/rain - doesn't matter - same thing.
If I found someone with a VAG-COM - do you think that would help pinpoint/identify the problem??
Thanks

Yes & no.
As with any repair/diagnosis, the more tools you have available
to use, the greater the chance of you finding & solving the
problem.
Intermittent problems can be a pain, since in most cases, when
the problem occurs... you do not have the tools with you or
not attached.
There are simple things to keep an eye on/check when the
no start occurs.
2 important ones being:
- the check engine light is not illuminated when the key is
in the ON position (No power to ECM, ECM relay?)
- when you turn the key to crank, does the battery light
go out right away (before engine is actually running)? This
would be a sign of a faulty ignition switch (power is
lost in the crank position).

Thanks -
There is an engine oil pressure warning light that illuminates when the key is on. I don't believe this model has a "check engine light".
Also, when cranking, the battery light stays on - even though the car is again deciding not to start.
I don't have a scanner, nor the tools to do much testing. I hate to take it to a shop with this type of intermittent problem - very frustrating...
Thanks again for your ideas.
