I first thought that I was not getting fuel to the engine, but I have removed the pump and it is ok, then I started at the spark plugs and am getting nothing, then to the coil and am getting no voltage when the car is cranked up.From what I here there is no manual for this years model(1985 735i) so I purchased the 5 series to help with my problems. Also the computer display o n the passenger side of the dash that gives miles per gal. and other info is not working and I think the batteries need replacing, could that be the cause or were else should I look? Also, I ohmed out the coil before testing for voltage to it and the coil tested ok.
thanks for your time

Located the DME main relay and jumper the pins to the relay described in your E28 manual. This should hopefully give you spark and fuel. You can also bypass the fuel relay for testing using this method as well. The On Board Computer is yet another topic. Does the unit not work all or is just the back lighting out?

I cannot find any reference as to which relay pertains to the E.C.U. I did find the fuel pump relay, can I get some one who knows which one it is, and are there and tests the I can do at home with a digital multimeter
to test the E.C.U.

The main relay is behind right front shock tower. Send me your email address and I'll try and send you a pdf schematic of the circuit. I only go back to 1982 though.

Hi I am new to this discussion board, my name is Chris and I have the same problem but on an 86 L7, I just bought the car for $500 not running, from the BMW dealer. it has had a full life service from the dealer. car looks like a million $$$ inside and out BUT does not run. So I checked the usual. good battery,ok, check grounds,ok,good connections,ok,check for fuel,ok, check for spark, NO spark, so I go deeper and check the coil, good, i am getting 13 volts on the green wire when the key is on, but no on/off ground on the black wire. So I traced the wire to the ECU, No signal from the ECU. So before I go blow loads of money on a new ECU is there anything else I should check. I see something about jumping 87 and 30 on relay #2 in my manual, but that just makes the horn honk(at least that works)is there another relay? so please help! its a shame to have an ultimate driving machine dead in the driveway. thanks in advance. chris

I would say that the chances are pretty good it won't be the ECU (Murphy's law). Throwing parts at a problem like this is not a good idea and will end up costing you more than you can imagine. If you have a friend with a similar car, swapping known good parts is an acceptable diagnosis method, but you need a good friend...I would have a BMW expert do a diagnostic routine on it. Could be many things, including the OBC relay, the reference sensor, the coil, the ECU, the air flow meter, etc.

I also have a no-start condition, and no-spark is its name-oh. My particular issue also has to do with a sticky fuel pump relay, but there are sensors on the bell-housing (away from the fan, next to the tranny). The ECU uses these to determine when to ground the coil.

Also, there are more than two relays, and they decorate the engine compartment. You should really look into decent texts. Chilton goes only so far, but its description of the motronic system tells more than you might learn from the index.

cheers,

Frank

i change the head gasket for my 1985 735i, and i also change the camshaft, adjusted timing and reinstalled everything else. i tried to start the engine, it'll crank but won't start. there's fuel pressure, coils fine but theres no spark from the number one spark plug. i wanted to know if you can email me the diagram. do you know which sensors and relays i need to check, and how?

Thanks. Jay

Looks like the cruise control actuator. Does a cable run to the throttle body?

I'M NOT SURE. CAN YOU HELP ME GET A DIAGRAM OR A PIC THAT SHOWS ME WHAT HOSES (VACUUM, FUEL) GO WHERE? THE FIRST MECHANIC THAT WORKED ON THE CAR TOOK EVERYTHING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.(INCLUDING THE HEAD) SO I'M STUCK WITH PUTING EVERYTHING BACK. IF YOU CAN DO SOMETHING TO HELP ME GET AN IDEA OF WHERE THEY GO, IT WOULD BE THE LAST THING THAT I WOULD HAVE TO DO. THANK YOU

MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS mareeejain21@yahoo.com. Can you please send me a pdf schematic. My 1985 735i has a problem starting, it has something to do with the relay near the windshield on passenger side. When i try to start the car it sounds like theres no gas, but when i remove the relay, then put it back and try to start it, it starts but stays on only for about a minute. Please help me, i need a vacuum diagram, ventline(vapor, or purge valve connections), basically i need to know where all the hoses on the intake manifold is suppose to be connected to. Thank you in advance.

I'm new to this discussion group thang, but Charlie's suggestion of searching for a "Mobile Traditions CD" led me to this site: http://www.koalamotorsport.com/mall/e23cd.asp

I'm not sure that it cover's the 1985 year model (which I also own and have just run into the same no spark-no start problem), I'm waiting for a reply e-mail to let me know.

My problem started as a "hick-up" or hesitation on the freeway which became more frequent over a two or three week period, then I'd have to turn the key on for 15 seconds before starting, now it wont start.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thought I'd add: I checked the resistance on the coil. secondary is 6ohms, primary is dead flat 0.

Is this within spec? I cant find any test specs on this anywhere.

It should cover the 1985 model. Though I don't think you'll find the answer to your probelm in there. You'll need to figure out if it fuel or spark, systematically. Maybe Chuck Probst's Bosch fuel injection book would help. http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=gfib

I don't think it's fuel. I only know that I don't have spark from the coil. 0 primary resistance doesn't sound right. Most cars have half an ohm or so. Also secondary resistance seems low at 6ohm. I would think it should be at 10 or so, but like I said, I can't find any specs.

Does anyone know the correct coil specs for a 1985 735i?

And, by the way, thanks Charlie for the answer on the repair CD ROM. I don't think I can go wrong by buying that.
