Any chance that I can get info before the weekend? I know that you are busy, so I'm just hoping. Thanks

Sorry for the delay, let me look into it now. You're looking for the secondary air relay for a 96 328iS, correct? Anything else?

Yes, it's a 1996 328iS (M36 Engine)
Yes, I am looking for physical location of the relay that powers up the secondary air pump since it is NOT getting any power. Also, looking for any schematics showing pinout for that relay and the vacuum solenoid switch valve as well. I think that one is not fuctioning either, but I can't tell where it's getting power from (schematic would be good).
Thanks
Charlie

K6304 and full DME schematic. Let me if this is what you were looking for.

Excellent schematics. These are what I was looking for. Shown on Pg 1212.17-05 is the relay schematic which should help me troubleshoot.
Also, I had picked up the same drawing that you attached, from one of your earlier posts, and checked that relay shown in picture and it works (both coil and contacts), but I don't get power to the pump. Also, that drawing shows the fuse box on the left side of vehicle (looking from front of car), but mine is on the right side. Could the relay shown really be another relay on in my vehicle? From 1212.17-05, where is the POWER DISTRIBUTION 0670.2 or X7163 B+ DISTRIBUTOR physically located (shows "HOT at all Times")?
I also noticed in the schematics that the secondary air pump valve (X6163) has a relay, but mine is vacuum driven; any thoughts?
Thanks
I will try to use the schematics you provided to continue troubleshooting

Y6163 is an electrically operated vacuum switching valve. Maybe you have id the wrong valve. It's not the large vacuum valve that allows air into the exhaust. You should have power all the time at pin 2 of Y6163. I can look to see where the B+ originates, but please check first if you have + power at pin 2 of the relay. Do you feel like you haven't found the relay? Can you id wire colors at the relay block to match it to the schem? If you have the right relay, jumper pin 2 to pin 6 using a fused jumper. The pump should run. It's pin 4 that activates relay K6304 which activates the pump (assuming you have ground (pin 5) and power (pin 2) present at the relay).

Great, you have given me an idea on troubleshooting and a way forward. Yes, Y6163 is an electrically operated switching valve which is not currently working because I get vacuum at the input, but none at the output (maybe that one is bad too and I need to change it). That valve opens, through vacuum, the large vacuum check valve that allows air into the exhaust (I changed that one when I changed the air pump).
I'm not positive that I have identified the air pump relay yet, but I have not tested for power at the pins that you identified and I will do that first. None of the relays are marked in the fuse box or on the relays themselves. I cannot id the colors at the relay block because the wires are under the fuse box (in bundles) and I'm not sure I want to remove that box to look underneath.
I think that once I positively identify the air pump relay, I should be able to find the problem, but so far, other than the drawing you sent me, I'm really guessing on which relay it is.
Thanks for your patience with me as I am learning how to troubleshoot this vehicle. I'm not really a mechanic, but am willing to try just about anything as long as I have information.
Again, you are awesome.

I am also troubleshooting the same issue -- 1998 e36 though.
-succesfully get air pump to turn on by removing vacuum hose and using manual vacuum pump at exhaust check valve.
-followed vacuum line to from check valve to the vacuum solenoid valve - disconnected vacuum input and pulled vacuum manually- air pump did not start. Not sure if the solenoid is in in-active state or broken.
Does the solenoid only get power when ambient temp is cold?(temp?)or x-seconds after every start regardless of ambient temp?
Any assistance on troubleshooting would be helpful. Al

Can you please help me locate relay for my 97 328i secondary air pump? There seem to be located in different places on different models.

Thank you.

Thanks in advance.
