Just picked up a 96 A4 and the Bentley AUDI A4 (96-01) Service Repair Mmanual.
So here's problem, when the head lights are left on and you get out of the car (taking the key) no buzzer sounds, same sitution when when you put the key in the ignition and don't start the car, no chimes. (And I have 16 year old who is constantly leaving the lights on)

I found the warning buzzer on the schematic, but have no idea where it is located in the car. The warning buzzer (H3 on schematic) is not list on the electrical parts location list.

There is a possibility that the driver door switch responsible for turning on this buzzer isn't working. You might see if this in an intermittent contact by manually pushing the door latch closed (with the driver's door open), then allowing it to snap open when you pull the release handle.

There are a couple of switches in the door latch unit, the other one of which is used for the central locking/interior lights system. It looked to me like a fair amount of work to get access to this assembly, but with the door panel off, you can pull off and reconnect the electrical connectors to be sure they are making good contact.

Doesn’t seem to be the door switch, the courtesy lights all come on when the door is open. The other thing is that there are no chimes/buzzer if you have the key in the ignition and the car is not turned on.

On the schematic, the buzzer is wired to the “Mini Check System Control Module” which seems to be part of the Instrument Cluster.

So basically , I’m lost.

The switch for your interior lights is different from the one that turns on the buzzer. With the door open and the key in, try grabbing the rubber boot covering the wires between the door hinges, and moving it around. Door wires flex a lot, and sometimes break in this bundle. If you hear the buzzer at all, the broken wire can be repaired.

Took a while to try your suggestion (daughter was never home). I did everything short of pulling rubber boot out, no buzzer. Is the buzzer a plug in unit? If so, where is it located? maybe I can do a voltage check at the buzzer (if I can find it)
Thanks for the help

I have the same problem with my audi A4, but worse. When I start the car, the chime goes off -- as if I had left the key in and opened the door. When I turn on the headlights the continuous buzzer sound commences. It is as if the switch for sensing that I've stopped the car and am ready to get out is reversed. When I do stop the car and turn off the key, instead of sounding, the buzzer for lights and chime for key are silent.

I stopped by a mechanic today and he said it might be the ignition switch. But I suspect a door contact issue. My interior lights also do not go on when I open the door.

I inspected a passenger door and saw that a door contact on it is broken but that does that explain the problem with the light buzzer?

I listened to the buzzer on a 2000 A4, couldn't really tell where it was coming from. looks like I'll be pulling some under dash panels off.

If anyone knows what the buzzer looks like or it's approximate location, it would help out.

Thanks

Wish I could say I solved the problem. Since the chimes are not working I could not locate it under the dash. The problem is really going to start when daughter uses the car all the time, I know the lights will definitly be left on (Ok I'll admit it, I've left them on)

At this point, short of bringing the car to the dealer (which I have no intention of doing > repair could cost more than the car is worth)I'll have to keep trouble shooting until I find it.

Does your instrument cluster have a screen-like grid on it ? The bell could be behind it.

I also have the notion that the buzzer is part of the instrument cluster.

I was just going to comment on waht a sense of humur you have, mention this beautiful photo and don't send it. Now that was cruel LOL

Great picture! I'll take a look when I pull the panel to replace the bulbs.

I gave my daughter a new radio for the car, when they did the install they forgot to hook the Alpine unit up to the rear speaker amp.

Again thanks for the help!

I know this was years ago but do you remember what the problem ended up being? My '98 avant wagon started doing the same thing-- ignition chime runs for a couple of minutes and the headlight warning tone sounds when you turn the lights on and stays on for a few minutes. a bit annoying, makes me want to drive fast.
