I am trying to remove the Neutral Safety Switch in a US version E34 but the Ignition Lock Lever is pivoted directly above the top mounting screw of the NSS. The Bentley book seems to address a NON-US car without the lock lever. How can I either remove the lock lever or somehow just remove the NSS around the lock lever?? Does anyone have direct experience with this problem? Is the book ever going to be updated to instruct around this problem or did I miss something in the book?? Thanks in advance for advice. eric
My transmission was misbehaving and the Bentley manual and some threads suggested that the switch could cause the problems if defective. I could find no way to get the "captive" bolt out, but I could loosen it enough to get the switch out. Be careful though, those little flimsy tabs break off easily. A couple broke for me with no detrimental result. It was obvious that former owner(s?) had spilled coffee with sugar into it and a couple of M&M's too. A lot of sweat and bad language later the switch looked a lot better and the M/A switch would work correctly again, but the problem was unaffected.
I believe that the cable interlock was added to later cars only. But the design is poor and the switch flimsy.
