hey i just got an '85 vanagon and my gas gauge doesnt work so of course i run out of gas, but then after pushing it to the gas station and filling it up it does nothing. it turns over and everything but i think it might not be getting any gas. iam way confussed on this anyones advice is much appreciated.
VW Vanagon fuel pumps are very sensitive to running dry. The fuel they pump keeps them cool. As soon as the key is turned to the "on" position, the pump (just below your sliding door) should buzz. If not, replace it.
And replace the filter, while you are at it. That is if you don't recall the last time it was replaced.
A Vise-Grips, with padding, upstream from the pump and filter makes the job much less messy.
in addition to the "buzz" test, that is if it buzzes but it still won't start, try some of the basic tests.
Having "The Book" will be very useful.
- try a fuel pressure test, if you have a pressure gauge,
test the injector spray pattern (simply detach
the injector pair on one side at a time,
get an appropriate pan/cup and have someone
try to start it. You should see a cone-shaped spray)
- remove one wire at a time and insert a good
spark plug. Touch the engine ground with the
spark plug and have someone crank it.
- test also spark timing
