Greetings fellow V8 hound, I would very much like the information you have for sale. I have not one but two V8 Quattros. One for spares. The spare one was my first, a UK spec left hand drive 3.6 auto. I had a major gearbox issue. It was at this point I discovered just how rare these cars are. Especially in the UK. I stored it for 4 years until I befriended a Bentley engineer. I live in Crewe, the original home of Bentley. He encouraged me to persevere with the car and we put it back on the road as it was driveable, however only in manual mode. The idea was to run it and hunt down another gearbox at the same time. I eventually found another gearbox at an Audi breakers in Bristol and was all set to go down and pick it up. Then an entire 1992 4.2 car in Black, the same colour as my other one appeared on e-bay, with no engine and no differential. Hmmmm, I trust coincidence. It was all the way up in very cold and windy Aberdeen, Scotland. This might be part of the reason that I won the auction for a mere 175! Result. I rented a trailer and a friend and I set off one cold December morning to collect it. When we got it back and had a good look round it we discovered that it was a considerably higher spec model in fantastic condition, much better than my first one and it was also right hand drive. Much better for UK roads. So the decision was made to swap the engine over into the newer car. Myself and Jock, from Bentley, had both done this sort of thing before and even though the engine was of smaller displacement than the one that had been removed, it was of identical physical dimensions and fitted a treat. Now we get to the major, major, major pain in the arse!
First up, the engine runs a treat. Some things won't work with this mismatch, cruise control, on board computer etc, but I can live with that. The big problem is, guess what? Yes, the gearbox. An auto box needs three vital pieces of information to function correctly does it not? Engine speed, axle speed and throttle position. In the 91 3.6 car, the signal from the throttle potentiometer comes directly to the gearbox ecu in analogue format. In a 92 4.2 car, The same signal goes to the engine ecu first and then out again in digital format to a completely different type of gearbox ecu. What I would like to do is use the gearbox ecu from the 3.6 car as the gearboxes are physically identical but I need all the wiring diagrams and pin out maps to do this. I've tried Audi UK, Ingolstadt, dealers, breakers, American specialist workshops, everything I can possibly think of and nothing! It is heartbreaking to walk past this lovely 92 V8 Quatrro every day knowing that it will only go forwards in third. (limp mode). It pulls off quicker in reverse! Why don't you just put the engine and gear box in the original car I hear you ask. Well, when we took the engine out we found stress fractures on the chassis and many other tell tale signs of a front end smash and repair job. Including an out of line torque converter. This went some way to explaining the original gearbox issue.
In the 2 years that the car has been sat there in the yard ready for it's m.o.t. and itching for a blast down the M40 patiently waiting for it's new engine to stop being so bloody shy and strike up a conversation with the rest of the car I have located and purchased a number of spares including a complete 4.2 engine with wiring loom attached. However I do not have an ecu for it. This is plan B. If the gearbox wiring issue cannot be resolved then I will somehow acquire aforementioned missing engine ecu and make it a 4.2 again. Only thing is I know the 3.6 I have is reliable and I've never heard the 4.2 running. I bought it off a workshop floor where it had been for some years. I only have it on trust that it's a good one. I'll take the chance though if it turns out to be my only option. If your good self or anyone else reading this can help me in any way, or if I can help you with my experience with these cars then please don't hesitate to get in touch. You can e-mail me directly at howiegv8@btinternet.com. Hope you enjoyed the story, cheers, Howie.
