Transmition shifting from high to next lower gear erratically

My 99' A8 is shifting back and forth between high gear and the next lower gear quite rapidly like it doesn't know what gear to shift to when cruising at 40 to 50 mph. Then if I lift my foot of the pedal at about 70 mph instead of costing it shifts down for no apparent reason. 14,000 miles ago I changed the trans fluid and filter and the radiator fluid is at the correct level. Timing belt and all that other stuff has been replaced 3,000 miles ago. The car has 110,000 miles on it. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks

See this link:

Most likely your transmission isn't shifting gears unexpectedly, it's your torque converter lockup clutch engaging and disengaging without logic. Are you using the correct ATF? Esso LT 71141 or the Audi factory fluid (part # G 052 162 A2) from the Audi dealer (the same thing) are the only fluids recommended by AudiAG and the transmission manufacturer, ZF. According to ZF, using anything else automatically voids the warranty on your +-$8,000 transmission. (If it's not a quattro. If it's a quattro, it could be more!) You decide.

Yes, I used the correct fluid. My software indicated that the problem was "brake light switch B". I replaced that and I still have the hunting for the right gear. The fault code disappeared. So now I have no fault codes but the hunting continues. Any other ideas?

Do a throttle adaptation. Then reset the tranny logic by holding the gas to the floor, then turning the key until all the dummy lights come on...hold for ~15 seconds.
Probably won't help, but it's free to try.

How do you do a throttle adaptation?

OK, so the Throttle Adaptation and resetting the tranny logic are two different processes. Got it! thanks!

I have a 99 Audi A8 and the transmission has been doing the same shifting for the last two years. Audi says it needs a new transmission. Other then a nusience, the car runs fine. Have to keep it in lower it in 3rd in town, but its o.k. on the highway. Audi doesn't know what the problem is. Tried throttle adjustment, a little better, but still the same shift problem. I got some leafs in the car near the windshield wipers and got a flood in the car. Brought it to Audi and they said they cleaned out the clog. $275.00 later it still gets wet inside. Any body have the same problem. jrgrasso@verizon.net

Have had same problem incresingly over last 12 months. It seems TOTALLY electronic (clutch solenoid, dirty, shorted?) Car is FINE in manual Tip-tronic mode EXCEPT when it shifts down, so the whole tranny shouldn't be shot. ?? Ideas, thoughts?

Yeah, I had the same problem on my 2001 A8L. Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak. Check the EGR valve.

"still gets wet inside"
.....Even with completely clean fresh air plenum drain and no rain, clogged AC drains in the passenger compartment (common occurence) will flood interior. Happened to me just recently ('01 A8)....filled my right shoe with cold water when I turned a corner and found the passenger side flooded badly.
This did the trick:

All dry, all the time now.
