okay for starters, i drive a 1993 BMW 325i.
for the past two weeks or so, my windows (and my sunroof)have been acting sort of funky. when i started my car, both my windows and my sun roof didn't become active until after five minutes or so. and just last night, they all just stopped working completely. all of my fuses and relays appear to be okay, so i'm not sure what's going on. anybody out there with a solution?

Sounds like a comfort relay issue. Search this forum for relay location. Hopefully its on here. I can never nemember where it is.

check the fuses too i believe it's 23.......that controls the windows and the sunroof i thought it'd be my comfort relay too but turned out to be fine so it was actually the fuse cuz i had a short in my map light unit.

the comfort relay is located behind the dash under the steering... remove the lower dash panel there will be a metal panel behind it. remove it and look under you will see 2 relays. on a 93 resorder they were blue and brown. the blue is the comfort relay. you can actually resolder it if you have the know how... my sunroof was acting up and the dealer wanted 1500 plus for a cassette and it was a 21.00 relay..

So I've had THIS exact issue. My Windows would not work right after I would turn the car on. After like a minute they would start working again. Then one day they stopped working altogether. So today, I finaly got off my lazy *** & started trouble shooting this issue. At least for my '93 318i, my issue was the comfort relay. I starteded with the window switches, which were NOT lit, which told me they were not getting any power. I checked the fuses, they were ALL ok. I then looked at the COMFORT RELAY, which is under the driver side dashboard in back of the knee bolster, (metal cushing for your knees in an acident) After removing this, YOu can pull down the relay tray by pulling out the tabs on the side of the tray. I measured the voltage there & was getting 12.5 VDC, which told me it was probably the relay itself.
Being the DIY kind of guy, I opened UP the relay, (BLUEish or GREYISH) looked at the mini circuit boad, noticed that one of the soldering points was completely UN-soldered, (guess over time & heat it de-solders itself.) Anyways, I re-soldered that leg back on to the board. But it back in it's relay plastic housing, only one way to put it back in. The housing has groves on the side for the mini circuit board to slide back in. Re-installed the relay on the socket, turned the key on to the on switch, (NOT START CAR). And walla, Window switches lit back up, power to the windows & they worked.
This is only a temperary fix. I would just get the $18-$21 relay & replace it. But since I'm CHEAP like that, plus all the auto parts store were closed at the time that I was ding it, plus shipping time, I said SCREW it. "I'll just re-solder this one & see what happens." Now that I know it's the comfort relay, I'll order one and wait until my windows stop working againg to put the new relay on, since it takes a good 30-60min to get into the area. Hope this HELPS.
You might also want to try take the voltage from your MAIN window "Breaker", that is located right under speedo or next to the ignition switch. If that switch is pressed or NOT working, then it may only be that switch. I took the voltage (12.3VDC) there before I went on to the COMFORT RELAY.

i had this problem on a 94 318is. i replaced comfort relay and it didn't help. check comfort relay with another relay from car. i used horn relay. found help on another forum. check your fuse #43 - labeled vanity mirror. if fuse is out it will disable sunroof and windows. replace and try again. i found a short in the sunroof panel where a power antena had been installed. good luck.

This is a helpful topic because I've got the same problem.
My sunroof works fine but the driver and passenger side windows doesn't work/move at all. I can hear a clicking noise then I toggle the window switch but nothing happens. Funny how both of them are not working so it couldn't be the motors that burnt out at the same time. It has to be the comfort relay because I checked the fuse and it was ok.
I'm picking up the comfort relay at the BMW dealer on saturday and as soon as I snap it in and the windows move up and down, there will be a grin on my face from ear to ear!

Ahhh!!
Didn't work. Now I got 2 comfort relays. I pulled the panels and testing the motor and it didn't budge. Time for 2 new motors and I have to drill out the rivets to take out the motor too. Oh well, it has to be done.
Anyone knows of a site where I can get my motors?

I have a 1994 325i Convertible and the comfort relay is not by the steering wheel under the big aluminum thing. Any ideas where else it might be in my car?
